My first large scale work. I made this portrait in charcoal on a spraypainted background in 2016 using a reductive method, chiseling away at the blacks with erasers and finding the features through the back and forth process of a sculptor, but on a 2D surface. I am so proud of this work. It marks the beginning of my love affair with the figure as a subject matter and the material I consistently work in more than any other: charcoal.
